As world leaders gather for the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting, CEDAW Rising has joined 267 civil society organizations worldwide in urging Member States to uphold, preserve, strengthen and celebrate the international treaty system that protects human dignity.
The open letter, coordinated by Human Rights First and ICVA, calls on governments to resist efforts to weaken or dismantle international norms—and instead reaffirm their commitments to the treaties that anchor peace, equality and justice.
For CEDAW Rising, this means elevating the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) as a cornerstone of gender justice. Implementation of CEDAW at all levels of government—particularly at the local level—is essential to advancing equality, addressing intersectional harms and ensuring that human rights standards translate into meaningful improvements in people’s daily lives.
At a moment when multilateral norms are under threat, upholding human rights treaties—including CEDAW—is critical.
