We are grateful for the strong interest in CEDAW Rising’s customizable Model Local CEDAW Ordinance. We are finalizing this resource to support advocates, community leaders and government officials in drafting CEDAW legislation tailored to local needs and priorities. Here are a few examples of key changes reflected in the model ordinance:

The model ordinance builds on existing CEDAW ordinances by providing actionable guidance regarding several new focal areas, including:

  • Migrant justice
  • The care economy and family support
  • Indigenous rights
  • Racial justice
  • Environmental and climate justice

These focal areas augment existing provisions on gender-based violence, economic development, education, health care, the criminal legal system, housing and homelessness, civic participation and equitable representation in decision-making. In drafting CEDAW legislation, jurisdictions may select the focal areas most responsive to the communities they serve.

The model ordinance also strengthens implementation by emphasizing a whole-of-government approach, applying a pervasive intersectional lens and ensuring that gender equity remains prioritized during emergencies.

We are completing final revisions and engaging subject matter experts to ensure the model ordinance is both authoritative and practical for a diverse range of cities and counties. We look forward to launching this resource in the coming weeks!
